A Very special weekend

A Very Vintage Wedding Fair BLOG 0001

A week ago today, I was anxiously working alongside a few of the few remaining exhibitors, bringing in the last of their furniture, setting up. Getting ready. Prepping the Bleeding Heart Gallery for the doors to open to the second A Very Vintage Wedding Fair. This time I was doing it solo… and I was excited to share with you all these amazing people.

I went to sleep with the same questions rolling around and around in my head. Would it be a success? Would you all come? Had I done enough to let you know all about it, to make sure you knew it was happening? Would rain keep everyone away? Were there going to be enough slices of the Bleeding Heart’s legendary carrot cake?

Saturday came and the sun was out and I breathed my first massive sigh of relief! Sunshine! We were there early, we worked hard. We all set up. We got the hall ready, the stands looking beautiful and along you all came! In fact there was a queue forming before we even had a chance to open the doors.

Amazing!

Thank you to each and every one of you who did come and join us. It was such a fabulous weekend and so great to be a part of. I wandered around seeing so many smiles, hearing gasps of absolute delight when brides wandered into the Vintage Wardrobe and overheard the most lovely comments on how nice everyone was.

Here are just a few taster images to share with you of some of the amazing talent we had join us. I hope that for those of you who came along, you walked away inspired and with lots of ideas for your wedding days and for this of you who could not make it, I hope this blog has given you lots of new ideas and contacts for your own weddings. Have a truly magical time.

Look Book : 70′s Barefoot Bride

Debs Ivelja AVVWF FINAL 0137

Oh, the sweet 70′s. Everything about this era makes my world and not just wedding related references. It is the decade of Woodstock, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and all the many greats finding fame. It is the decade of Saturday Night Fever, Jaws and Rocky. Legendary.

Its the decade we started to win the social, ecological and feminist movements we were rallying for and sparked changes that we still live and aspire to today. If I could choose any decade to live my 20′s over again, it would be the 70′s.

Debs Ivelja AVVWF FINAL 0144

As a bride, this is the era you can pretty much do things how you want. Embrace your inner earth child and go barefoot. Wear flowers in your hair and bound around in a floaty dress. Embrace mother nature and get married in an orchid….or wait for the Solstice and celebrate.

Embrace your inner Bianca Jagger and ditch the dress for a suit. Go shirtless. Wear a wide brim hat instead of a veil. Or perhaps go Disco Inferno. Think sequins, gold, one shoulder and sparkle your way through your wedding.

Without a doubt, finding an authentic 70′s dress is a tad easier than most eras. Not only that but our Mum’s clearly had more realistic figures and you are as likely to find a 12 or a 14 than a smaller size 6! Anyone else have that issue,or just me?

We chose a Damsel Vintage dress for our styled shoot and it was perfect. Floaty sleeves and a touch of lace. This dress looks amazing with a bit of sparkle, as it would a leather belt and chunky jewels if that is more your style.

Debs Ivelja AVVWF FINAL 0128

Play with your flower ideas. Daisies continued into the 70′s as the hippy brides favourite. Gipsophila is a great alternative to a over fussy bouquet and wildflowers are always a beautiful choice.  Embellish or go for something a little unique. This fabric bouquet is by White Willow Designs and a custom made bouquet with authentic 70′s fabric prints would be an amazing touch to your look.

Debs Ivelja AVVWF FINAL 0142

Go barefoot.

Be simple.

But if you are planning a wedding that needs shoes, Forever Soles have an amazing range of bridal shoes that are 70′s inspired and utterly divine.

Retro 70′s jewellery is fairly easy to come by if you scour your local vintage shops. We found this beautiful piece amongst the collection from Not Just Jewels. Diamante adds sparkle, but wooden or beaded options are a great alternative for this look.

Debs Ivelja AVVWF FINAL 0147

Nothing says boho more beautifully that a head piece… add a touch of sparkle to your look with this beautiful hair piece by Shut the Front Door.

Debs Ivelja AVVWF FINAL 0156

Debs Ivelja AVVWF FINAL 0134

Loose waves, soft curls, relaxed plaits. feathers and head pieces. This look is all about creating a look that says “I just want to look like me”. Think about floral head crowns as a possible option, or a veil of feathers like this one from Shut The Front Door?

Debs Ivelja AVVWF FINAL 0159

70′s make up is fresh faced and natural. Beautiful eyes in hues of browns… or blue if Disco is your thing. Whatever you choose, pale pink gloss is a must. The staple of every 70′s woman, gloss was everything

Debs Ivelja AVVWF FINAL 0160

Most of all, enjoy the look and do it your way, as your 70′s self would want you to!

Huge thanks to all those who contributed to this shoot…

Meeting the Queen Of Hearts

I am so happy to have you at the fair this year Penelope, please could you tell us a little about the lady behind Queen of Hearts?
It is wonderful to be on board! This will be my first time exhibiting at a bridal fair and I am really excited.  To give you an idea of who I would describe myself as a retro loving, tattoo toting wife with three gorgeous young kids and two mischievous sausage dogs. I grew up listening to music from the 40′s, 50′s and 60′s and reading all the classic novels. My parents drove a Kombi, which ignited my love for old-time cars, and I started buying retro and vintage clothing and nicknacks when I got my first job at 14.  I’ve had many job titles since then, travelled whenever the opportunity arose and consider myself lucky to have met so many interesting and inspiring people to share my life with.

What led you to become a celebrant Penelope?
When my husband and I were planning our wedding we both felt it was important to have a celebrant we connected with who shared some of our hobbies, interests and style.  There are many wonderful celebrants but it took us a long time to find someone who suited us.  This kind of got me thinking there must be other couples with similar interests in the same situation (turns out there is!  Hello to all the lovely couples I have met so far!)
Following the arrival of our third bub, I decided to take a break from the hectic demands of being an environmental scientist and part-time assistant event coordinator and pursue a career that would be just as personally fulfilling but more flexible with children.
There’s been a huge increase in the number of people getting into the style and culture of bygone eras and I love that I can be that “someone” for couples who are incorporating vintage into their wedding.

What is the process that you follow  / How do you work with your couples? What steps do they need to take as they prep for their ceremony?
It is always exciting meeting a couple for the first time and learning their history and what they have planned for their future as husband and wife.  The vows you take on your wedding day is what you will live by for the rest of your life so it’s very important to me to help each couple plan a ceremony that incorporates their unique and individual values, qualities and beliefs.   I ask lots of questions at our first meeting, encourage as many emails as necessary and will answer a phone call at practically any hour of the day (or night!).
Any must do’s / advice you have for couples?
Follow your instincts and do what feels right.  It is ok to throw tradition out the window!

Any special memories from a recent wedding or event that you would like to share with us?
I was recently having a cuppa with a bride-to-be and her mum when her vintage wedding dress was delivered. She immediately tried it on and we all burst in to happy tears as she looked breathtaking and the dress was a perfect fit. Rarely is vintage a perfect fit which made it more amazing! We spent the next couple of hours talking about all the possibilities of the original bride who wore the dress over 60 years ago.

How far and wide do you travel for weddings Penelope?
I am based on the Sunshine Coast but happy to talk to couples regardless of where their ceremony is being held. Travel/accommodation costs would need to be negotiated if travel time is more than an a couple of hours.  You can find me on the verandah at the fair or contact me via my website www.queenofheartscmc.com or queenofheartscmc@gmail.com.  Having travelled, worked and lived many places throughout Australia and abroad, I am well experienced in adventure.

If you would like to see a bit more of Penelope, Queen of Hearts before the fair itself, head on over to her lovely website!

Meeting Jennifer Gifford Designs

This lovely lady probably does not need too much of an intro! Jennifer Gifford Designs has been a huge support of the fair, ever since we started and we are so excited to have her back. Her stunning, elegant bridal creations are as beautiful in the images as they are on the hanger and on the bride and I cannot wait to see what delights she will have with her at the fair.

Hi Jen… we do love you so at A Very Vintage Wedding Fair and cannot wait to have you back! Please could you share a little of what you have in store for us?

I will have a couple of new gowns on display and lots of lovely things to chat to Brides about, Including my New “One of a Kind” Collection of gowns.

You have been so busy in the last 12 months! Any favourite memories or moments?

So many favourite moments but one in particular was when my Daughter Neve modelled for me at my Website Launch Party in December, she looked so beautiful.

692.jpg{ngg studios}

589.jpg{ngg studios}

Your range is ever growing and utterly divine Jen! Where do you get your inspiration from?

My inspiration comes from many sources including old movies and fashion but mostly it comes from the beautiful Brides themselves.  I hear first hand what is missing in the market for these girls and help create thier dream wedding gown for them.  It is very special and always inspiring.

191

So you do custom designs and a ready to wear range? Could you tell us a little about how these differ?

My Made to Measure is for girls who have something very specific in mind and can not find it anywhere, they bring me their ideas and I help make it a reality.  My Made to Wear collection can be ordered as is and to a standard dress size or to a brides measurements, there are no fittings included in this service but for an extra fee fittings are available.

263.jpg{ngg studios}

For brides out there who are just not sure of what they want their dress to be yet, do you have any recommendations or advice you would give?

Take some time and go and try some gowns on, even if you know for sure you want to get something made this will help you decide what shapes, colours and fabrics suit you.

710.jpg{ngg studios}

How long would it take for one of your custom dresses to be created Jen? And could you share with us a little of the process?

Generally I like between 12 to 9 months from ordering the gown.  This ensures the Bride secures a booking with me as I do book out quite quickly.  From there I order fabrics and send out swatches.  I then see the Bride for their first fitting about 12 weeks prior to thier Big Day.  Fittings then occur every two weeks after that until the gown is complete.

Thank you! Lastly, if you could choose three words to describe your gowns, what would they be ?

Simple, Elegant and Lovely.
